Making Tracks:
Snowshoes Keep you on top of winter
Lake Tahoe Snowshoeing

True, Snowshoeing is slower than skiing, but with it’s comfortable learning curve, it’s just the sport to lure folks of any fitness level out of hibernation and into nature, be it at a local park or a wilderness campsite.
Just strap on your snowshoes, begin walking and, voila`, your an intermediate. Practice with adjustable ski poles - recommended to help with balance - and you’ll be as adept as the prehistoric asians who invented snowshoes and wore theme to cross into the North America.

Though snowshoes retain their aura of practicality, nowadays most people use them for recreation. Take a walk when the snow is a plush white blanket and your breath curls in the air. Happily, snowshoes can have maximum impact on your waistline, and you will stay warm as you burn 1,000 calories per hour, You don't need to allow snowdrifts to impede your exercise. You may want to share the natural wonders with friends and family; almost everybody can keep up.
Or you may choose to go solo; there's little use of injury, since you're unlikely to fall and the snowshoeing gait is easy on the joints. And getting lost is unlikely as long as you can see your footprints.

Snowshoes have other advantages. They'll take you where skis can't, and they don't make the ear splitting whine of a snowmobile. Journey to a desired spot, pick the path you want to traverse and strap on your snowshoes.

Now imagine climbing a steep hill to reach a glorious vista or zigzagging along a crooked path to approach a frozen waterfall. In fact, you can only imagine such a trek on skis. On snowshoes, you can arrive there.

Smaller snowshoes with narrower heels allow you to jog smoothly atop the drifts and provide enhanced maneuverability. Slightly bigger snowshoes offer greater “flotability,” the capability to stay atop the snow. And don't worry about investing in expensive attire. The bears and coyotes you may encounter won't care about how you look. Do dress in layers, particularly light synthetics that absorb body moisture. Wear warm, waterproof, comfortable boots, though snowshoes for jogging are designed to accommodate running shoes.

Good Citizens Of The Earth

Snowshoes are small, light, inexpensive, easy to use, low maintenance (particularly the modern designs) and a sublime way to get the most out of winter. They also help you commune responsibly with nature, which is the basic tenet of Leave No Trace, a nationwide program cosponsored by Subaru of America, Inc. that advocates respect for wildlife. Leaves No Trace encourages wilderness visitors to leave what they find in the wild and to be considerate of other visitors. On even the largest snowshoes, you'll have minimal impact on the snow and vegetation.

So what are you waiting for - except, of course, the snow?
